Hyde Park Barracks Museum

A fascinating history.
Built in 1819 to house the male convicts held at the service of the government, the Barracks are steeped in history. You can learn all about them at the Hyde Park Barracks Museum. Since the 19th century, the buildings have had various uses: first used as a prison for 50,000 prisoners, then as housing for immigrant women, these buildings were finally converted into government offices. Discover period documents as well as a reconstructed convict dormitory. More than just a museum, this place represents an overview of the history of Sydney up until the 20th century.
